What to Know Before You Drill

Thinking About Installing Your Ring Doorbell Yourself?

Before you grab that drill, take a minute to read this. Every week, I help homeowners fix Ring Doorbells that were installed incorrectly — from crooked angles to damaged walls. Whether you’re mounting on stucco, wood, or brick, here’s what you need to know first.

Plan Your Layout First

Set the device up in the Ring app before drilling. You’ll get a live preview that can help you determine the ideal placement. This avoids unnecessary holes and ensures a clear camera view.

Choosing the Right Drill

Most homeowners can use a basic cordless drill for installations on wood or siding. However, if you’re working with harder materials like stucco, brick, or concrete, a hammer drill is highly recommended

Cordless Drill: Best for wood, drywall, or vinyl. Ensure it’s fully charged and use a lower torque setting.

Hammer Drill: Essential for masonry surfaces. It combines rotary drilling with hammering action to break through tough materials more efficiently.

Choosing the Right Drill Bit

Using the wrong drill bit can result in cracked walls, stripped screws, or loose mounts. Here’s how to choose the correct bit for your surface:

Stucco or Brick: Use a masonry bit (3/16” or 1/4”).

Wood or Siding: Use a standard twist bit. Start with a 1/8” pilot hole. –

Drywall: Avoid if possible. If necessary, use anchors and pre-drill with the size recommended for the anchor.

Do You Need an Angle Mount?

Your doorbell might need a wedge or corner kit to improve its field of view. Flat mounting can limit the camera’s visibility or point it toward the ground.

Choosing the Right Anchors and Screws

The screws included with most Ring Doorbells work for basic installations, but they’re not ideal for every surface. For stucco, brick, or concrete, you’ll need masonry anchors or toggle bolts for a secure and lasting hold.

Stucco or Concrete: Use plastic or metal masonry anchors with matching screws.

Hollow walls or Drywall: Use toggle or molly bolts.

Wood: Pre-drill a pilot hole and use wood screws for a snug fit.

Real Example – When DIY Goes Wrong

Here’s what happens when you skip planning or use the wrong tools…

Common DIY Mistakes to Avoid

Mounting Too High or Too Low

Ring Doorbells are designed for chest-height installation — around 48 inches from the ground. Too high or too low can ruin your camera’s field of view.

Forgetting About Power Needs

Battery-powered models are simple, but wired models require the right voltage and a working transformer. Don’t start drilling until you know which version you have.
